Close to 3 crore household get jobs under NREGA

NEW DELHI: A total of 2.93 crore household in 330 districts across the country have got jobs under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act this financial year, Government said on Wednesday.
Official figures tabled in the Rajya Sabha showed that there is an increase in the number of beneficiaries of NREGA as compared to last fiscal during which employment was provided to 2.10 crore households spread across 200 districts.
To a separate question, the Rural Development Minister Mr Raghuvansh Prasad Singh said about 98.3 million people have migrated to cities from rural areas in the last ten years in search of jobs, for pursuing education and to do business.
"There is thus clear evidence of a rural-urban divide which indicates the need for generating rural employment, enhancing rural prosperity and providing rural educational and health facilities to achieve balanced socio-economic growth," he said. He cited lack of infrastructure, like rural road, electricity and drinking water is a major reason for the rural-urban divide.
The Minister said the Bharat Nirman programme and the NREGA are aimed at developing rural infrastructure and providing jobs to people in rural areas. NREGA has been implemented in 330 districts across the country and would be extended to the remaining d istricts from April. - PTI Close to 3 crore household get jobs under NREGA
